Top 5 Winter Photoshoot Locations in Southern Utah

(And one spot that doesn’t even look like winter!)

Winter in southern Utah is seriously underrated — from snow-dusted forests to red desert cliffs glowing at sunset, there’s a backdrop for every kind of shoot. Whether you’re planning an adventurous engagement session, cozy couples photos, or just love that crisp winter air, here are five of my favorite winter photoshoot locations near Cedar City (including one that feels like summer even in January!).

1. Wood Ranch

📍 Just outside Cedar City
Wood Ranch is the perfect mix of wide-open fields, mountain views, and rustic charm. In winter, the light gets soft and golden, and the snow settles gently across the grass — think dreamy, romantic photos with a touch of cowboy-country aesthetic.
Pro Tip: Shoot just before sunset for that glowy, golden hue against the snow. Bring a warm neutral blanket for cozy shots that match the natural tones.

2. Kolob Canyons (Zion National Park – Northern Section)

📍 About 25 minutes from Cedar City
Kolob is a winter classic. The red cliffs contrasted with white snow look unreal — it’s one of those locations that makes every photo pop straight out of camera. It’s peaceful this time of year, and the scenic overlooks give you incredible variety without long hikes.
Pro Tip: Morning or golden hour are best for even light — and it’s rarely busy in winter!

3. Duck Creek Village

📍 About 45 minutes east of Cedar City
If you want that winter wonderland vibe, Duck Creek is pure magic. Pine trees heavy with snow, cozy cabins, and quiet forest trails — it feels like stepping into a snow globe. Perfect for couples who want a mix of adventure and intimacy in their shoot.
Pro Tip: Bring boots and a thermos of hot cocoa — a few playful snow shots make for great candids here!

4. Parowan Gap Petroglyphs & Valley Views

📍 20 minutes north of Cedar City
For something a little different, the Parowan Gap gives you open desert landscapes, unique rock formations, and petroglyphs etched into stone. With snow-dusted peaks in the distance and red rock foregrounds, it’s the perfect mix of Utah history and modern adventure.
Pro Tip: Late afternoon light warms up the rocks beautifully — it’s a great golden hour location with tons of texture.

5. Red Cliffs Desert Reserve (Non-Wintery Option!)

📍 About 1 hour south near St. George
When you’re ready for a break from the snow, Red Cliffs is your sunny escape. The trails here stay dry most of the winter, giving you those red sand, warm-toned photos that feel like summer. It’s ideal for couples who want that “desert adventure” vibe without bundling up.
Pro Tip: Sunrise sessions here are unbeatable — soft light, glowing cliffs, and hardly anyone around.
